Master of Science in Information Systems

The Information Challenge

Rapid advancements in technology, dynamic markets, and the changing global business environment have created increased demand for professionals who can lead, manage, deliver, and support information systems. This demand has been accelerated by new competition, shorter product life cycles, outsourcing, and more complex and specialized international markets. Information systems professionals are required to lead and evolve information resources while partnering with corporate management. Organizations need IT professionals that are effective at working closely with their business partners to identify innovative opportunities to leverage IT for competitive advantage. Likewise, business people need to be more effective as they work closely with their IT partners. This requires an appropriate balance of technical, business/management, industry, and interpersonal (e.g. writing, presenting, working in teams) skills.

With over 1,000 students (one of the largest IS graduate programs in the world) this balanced program is designed for information systems professionals seeking to advance their careers in IT, for business professionals looking for ways to leverage their IT resources, and for academics that are preparing students for the challenges that await them. To meet the increasing need for professionals with the experience necessary to enable these important functions, Stevens offers a multi-track Master of Science program to help achieve your Information Technology career objectives. This program prepares students for careers such as:

• IT Management

• Systems Analyst

• Management Consultant

• Project Management

• Business Analyst

• Technical Specialist

• IT Liaison

• Entrepreneur

• Outsourcing Manager

• Systems Integrator

• Internal Consultant

• Academic

In addition to strong practical, real-world IT and management skills, graduates of the program leave with improved communication, interpersonal, team, analytic, and critical thinking skills. The MSIS is a professional degree that integrates information and organizational cultures with emphasis on IT professionals that can contribute to the business. The continued success of the Stevens IS graduate program stems from its ability to respond and offer a complete set of flexible initiatives that meet the current and emerging demands of our industry partners. 80% of our students are sponsored by their company.

Program Locations and Schedules

Courses are offered on the Stevens campus (across the river from Manhattan in Hoboken, NJ), on weekday evenings, and Saturday mornings. Off-campus classes at company sites are typically held on weekday evenings on a trimester schedule. Most of the program tracks are also offered as online courses via Stevens WebCampus. Click here for more information for Saturdays and Off-campus.

Program Tracks

A wide range of concentrations are available including Industry, Management, Services, and Technology tracks. Each Track is comprised of 4 courses which can be taken independently for a Stevens Graduate Certificate.

Most students choose to take the Information Management Track because it is the industry standard and it allows more choices for electives. With this flexibility it is also possible to receive a Graduate Certificate in another track (in addition to the MSIS) by taking 1-2 more courses from the concentration.

An MBA, an Executive MBA, and Ph.D. degree with IS majors are also available. The core Information Management Track courses are available on Saturday mornings to company-sponsored students. Saturday courses not inclued on the required core list (next column) are available as electives to all IS students.

Degree Requirements:

12 graduate courses with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the degree of Master of Science is usually completed over a 2-year period. In addition to the twelve required courses, one or more of the following non-credit business/information technology foundation courses may be required depending on your background.

Stevens Institute of Technology provided me with the concepts, methods, and tools to use in my career. The advanced degree gave me a greater understanding of the Strategic Alignment between Information Technology and Business. The focus on strategy, Business Process Management, and Technology Fundamentals gave me the ideal landscape to further my career. The mix of classes provided me with a unique mixture of Business Acumen with Innovation through use of Technology. My experience with Howe School of Management and the Masters of Science in Information Management was excellent. I would recommend the program to Executives, Managers, and those interested in furthering their understanding of strategy, information technology, and business. The Professors are top notch in the industry.

Senior Systems Analyst - Class of 2009

It was such a pleasure to see one of my professors greeting us as we arrived on the field.

I am truly blessed that I had the opportunity to be among the best at Stevens and I want to thank you as you were an integral part of this.  I was fortunate to have you as a professor for Managing the IT Resource class.  Your class was incredibly beneficial to me both personally and professionally.  Thank you for both the course content as well as the manner in which you taught.  You have a style that is quite unique.  The lessons you taught, from amazing personal experience as well as within the confines of the curriculum penetrated not only the mind, but also the heart.  Even the way you went about teaching has taught me to bring more style into my presentations because the way the material is delivered has a great impact on the audience.  There are professors, mentors, friends and family members that have touched my life in a positive way and you are amongst those individuals.  Thank you again for all I have learned.

Student - Class of 2009

I graduated yesterday and I couldn't help to stop and think about all the great people I had the chance to meet along the way at Stevens.
I learned a great deal in your class and I don't recall ever having to work as hard as I did for your class.
Funny thing is I am not alone; you seem to be very popular among the graduating class.

All I could hear throughout the ceremony yesterday was "He gave me a B."
All I could do was laugh, as many of us had something in common.
But no one spoke badly of you; there was a respect when your name was mentioned.
In the end, it was a great and valuable experience.
I recently had an interview for a senior position within my company.
In the interview, we got into the conversation of Business and IT.
Needless to say, the interviewer was surprised to hear me speak about Business and IT alignment and the need for better communication, strategy and planning.
In baseball terms, she pitched one in my sweet spot and I hit it out of the park. It was a great feeling.

With that, I just want to end by saying Thank You for being part of this.
Thank you for everything that you do.
You are a great teacher, and I feel privileged to have taken your course.
I hope our paths cross again in the near future.
