New Concentration - Business Process ManagementThe Howe School MSIS program offers a new Business Process Management and Service Innovation concentration in the Master of Science in Information Systems Program and focuses on the implementation and deployment of innovative process designs using information technology.
One of the courses in this concentration, MIS 712 - BPM and Workflow Implementation, addresses the techniques and concepts required to map, implement, automate, and evaluate business processes. Focusing on the technical and implementation aspects of Business Process Management, the course leads students from technical process design through the implementation and management of workflows to the structure of process-aware information systems. It discusses the distinction between business processes and business rules and outlines how they can be supported by technology. It details the technical structure of process-aware applications and provides an overview of technology standards that affect BPM systems. Modules on the run-time monitoring of processes and post-execution evaluation techniques complete this course. Students will learn hands-on process design and implementation using state-of-the-art tools from vendors such as Appian, Lombardi, SunGard and Intalio. Stevens Team in top 20 of Red Hat ChallengeA team from Stevens was ranked #19 out of 343 in the Red Hat Challenge.A team consisting of Subhav Patel - (Team Leader, Graduate Assistant of Prof. Luftman), Himati Gandhi and Michael Moschitta ended up in the top 20 of the Red Hat Challenge. In total, there were 343 teams of 143 schools participating, with 975 contestants from 15 countries. All students in the MIS760 Strategic Issues classes were offered the opportunity to form a team and enter the challenge. There was no limit on the number of teams from a single school - in fact one school had more than 30 teams entered! The strategic analysis process that is the foundation for MIS760 serves as a valuable template for formulating business strategies and was used by the students in the Stevens team to help create their proposal. The Red Hat Challenge is contest for graduate students to formulate a group concept plan in response to a business challenge question. The Red Hat Challenge is an open invitation to create an innovative solution to a Red Hat business problem and provide the Company with original, cutting-edge ideas to shape its future business model. All full-time and part-time students attending graduate business school or graduate design school in pursuit of a master's degree in business administration or similar degree are eligible to enter in the Red Hat Challenge. This is the inaugural year of the challenge, but it may become an annual event. Professor Christine Bullen, the coordinator of the MIS760 course, says that she is prepared to sponsor a team every year. The prize for first place this year was $10,000 - a very nice incentive for future teams to think about! Technical Tracks
All tracks/concentrations are available weeknights in Hoboken. The Informantion Management Track is also available on Saturday mornings, via a two-year lock step Masters program, for students sponsored by their company. Students must have approval prior to joining this program.
Most concentration specific courses are also availbale on Saturdays and are open to all students. This includes the eight courses necessary for the MBA.
Corporate locations schedule their lock-step Masters program during the week and typically select the Informantion Management Track.
Most student take the Information Management concentration. It provides the opportunity to take two electives, where students can focus on any of the tracks. By completing the 1-2 remaining courses from a specific concentration (other than Information Management), in addition to the MSIS - Information Management Degree, graduates can also recieve a Stevens Graduate Certificate in the respective concentration.
In addition to strong practical, real-world IT and management skills, graduates of the program leave with improved communication, interpersonal, and team skills. The MSIS is a professional degree that integrates information and organizational cultures with emphasis on IT professionals that can contribute to the business.
To ensure quality and continuous improvement, participants are asked to appraise their courses twice each semester. These results are reviewed by the Faculty and are made available to both participants and their sponsoring organizations. |
