Admission Criteria

We have designed the Howe School’s PhD program in Technology Management to provide a strong background in basic disciplines, particularly management and economic theory, computational methods, research methodology and statistical methods. Our faculty is committed to quality research and teaching. And our objective as faculty is to instill those same values and work ethic in our PhD students.

Before entering the Howe School PhD program, you need to have attained some proficiency in selected areas of mathematics and quantitative analysis-- especially calculus, linear algebra, and basic statistics--because these tools are the general foundation for study in all business disciplines. To assure your proficiency, we offer remedial courses addressing these areas.

Doctoral study is more than a 40-hour-per-week job, and success in academia requires you to sustain that work commitment throughout your career. You must possess tremendous commitment and drive to succeed in the PhD program. The Howe School shares that commitment in its efforts to provide every full-time student with three years of financial support.  So when we assess applicants to the program, we not only look at academic qualifications, but we also try to discern whether candidates have the work ethic and the long-term research interests needed to successfully complete doctoral study.
As a Howe School student, you will find that our limited enrollment enables us to really get to know one another. Also, our nurturing environment helps us work in partnership with you to ensure that you graduate from Stevens with the ability to excel in your chosen career.

Criteria for Admission into the PhD Program

  • Students may be admitted upon completion of the master’s degree or its equivalent. All applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit either a GMAT or GRE score.
  • Foreign students whose native language is not English must also take the TOEFL test. Additional admission criteria for each specific concentration are detailed below.
  • Attach a copy of your Master’s thesis or comparable research project. If you have not completed a thesis or independent research project you will be required to complete an independent research project within two years after admission to the program
