Prediction of Individual Performance in Management Teams and Emergent Leadership Traits: Based on the "Big Five" Factor Model and Emotional Intelligence Measures

Abstract

This research is examining the correlation of "Emotional Intelligence" as proposed by Goleman (1995, 1998), personality traits using the ECI as developed by Goleman and Boyatzis, Five-Factor model (NEO-FFI) (Costa, McCrae, 1991), FIRO-B, Locus of Control, Tolerance of Ambiguity, (Whetten and Cameron, 2002) and other metrics. The ECI, NEO-FFI and other instruments are based either on self-evaluation or completed by someone very familiar with the subject. This research will compare and correlate the scores determined by the above instruments with those generated by a 'third-party' based on the analysis of subject behavior in a videotaped leaderless team setting. The research is looking for incremental validity of the ECI over the other measures and to determine is if "emotional intelligence" and measures of personality are able to predict emergent leadership traits.
