Message from the PhD Director

Prof. C. Timothy Koeller

The Howe School of Technology Management at the Stevens Institute of Technology has a great deal to offer doctoral students who are interested in becoming dedicated researchers and teachers.

You will learn from and work with world-class scholars who serve on editorial boards, who publish papers in top journals, and who win prizes for their work. These scholars have developed special strengths within their fields. Our technology management faculty has developed specializations in entrepreneurship, project management, new product development, innovation, and conflict in management teams. In information management, faculty research focuses on process automation and strategic IT alignment, while the telecommunications management group emphasizes financial analytics, the performance and economics of telecommunications networks, and the role of telecommunications policy in industry performance.

Because we keep our PhD program small, you will have ready access to these scholars. You will find that our program is very "user friendly" in the sense that you get a great deal of individual attention. You will never feel anonymous at the Howe School because we do our best to cultivate a caring and nurturing environment.

At the Howe School you'll acquire invaluable skills in research. These strong technical skills will enable you to conduct quality research -- and that research strengthens your work in the boardroom or the classroom. Our dedicated faculty are here to guide you, as you move toward a career at a leading research-oriented institution.

Intellectual Challenge and Personal Attention

When we ask our PhD students to describe the Howe School doctoral program, the same words come up again and again. They call the program intense, rigorous, and challenging. They also say that faculty members are accessible and that the atmosphere is friendly.

Both themes -- the rigorous program and the attention to each student -- are central to the program. We have been offering the doctoral program since 1990, and during that time we have developed a challenging curriculum taught by top-notch scholars. Recent journal articles, published by our faculty, reflect the caliber of research that we train you to produce. We also encourage you to be creative in your work.

Before the dissertation, you will be exposed to topics at the cutting edge of academic research and will expand your network of professional peers through seminars with leading scholars in your field.

Because you need to specialize within your field of study at the doctoral level, it is important for you to work with faculty members who are conducting research in your area of specialization.

Throughout your years at Stevens, you will receive personal attention. We keep enrollment in the doctoral program at about 20 full-time and 35 part-time students. You will find faculty to be readily accessible to you, and you will also find opportunities to assist in research, often as a paid research assistant.

So if you're a high-energy person interested in management education and scholarship and if you thrive on challenge balanced with personal attention, we invite you to join us at the Howe School.
