Dr. Hajo Reijers to Present on Process and Service Design
CEBPI BPM Colloquium Series
Process and Service Design
Hajo A. Reijers, TU Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Abstract
Process design is one of the pillars of Business Process Management. However, bestselling business books are surprisingly vague about how to actually derive an improved business process design. Much emphasis is placed on the managerial and cultural aspects of process change, but very little systematic guidance for process designers is provided. Thinking out an improved process design is often considered as a creative process: Put people in a room, give them brown paper, and the miracle will occur. Given the issues at stake, the question is whether this is a fruitful attitude.
In this talk, Dr. Reijers will present an overview on research that is being conducted on more structured approaches to process design. One of these methods aims to derive a favorable design for a process from a deeper analysis of the services it delivers, an approach similar to the use of a ́Bill of Materialsî to derive optimal assembly lines in manufacturing. Another method that will be presented draws from the identification of a set of some 30 ́best practicesî in process design. The talk will also cover the progress that is being made on incorporating these methods in concrete tools.
