Successful BPM Roundtable at Stevens Institute of Technology

HOBOKEN, N.J. The first BPM Roundtable organized by the Center of Excellence in Business Process Innovation attracted more than 50 attendees from industry and academia. Guests ranged from process consultants to users of BPM technology, to people who were just curious what BPM was about - including a few Stevens alumni.

In his opening remarks, Dean Lex McCusker introduced Stevens Institute of Technology and the Howe School of Technology Management. McCusker pointed out that "the Howe School of Technology Management is a catalyst that brings together management skills and technology expertise. This event is a prime example of how we combine academic and business excellence to deliver tangible results for our students and industry partners."

Nicola Michels from the German American Chamber of Commerce, who chaired the event, sent greetings to the members of the chamber that attended. Her remarks were followed by Dr. Frank Zimmermann, VP North America of arvato systems, who gave an introductory presentation on what BPM is. Arvato systems kindly provided event sponsoring. The evening was centered around two main talks. First, Dr. Michael zur Muehlen, Director of the Center of Excellence in Business Process Innovation spoke on "7 Steps to Better Processes", and provided actionable insight for decision makers that plan to revamp their companies' processes. He pointed out that "every organization is trying to improve operational efficiency, lower its cost and increase revenue margins. A mature Business Processes Management strategy is a key ingredient for sustainable improvement, and BPM is not just an issue for technologists. Process Innovation is not IT magic, it is continual and consequent questioning of the status quo."

Sandra Carolan-Brozy, director process and data management from Siemens North America, gave an overview of the Siemens process framework, and ilustrated how this framework is being used to assess the process management maturity of Siemens subsidiaries in North America. The event was a full success and CEBPI plans to conduct roundtables like this on a quarterly schedule. The next Roundtable is planned for February.
