Can the crowd be used in the early stages of open innovation? That is, can the crowd generate compelling ideas? We will describe how crowds can be assembled through crowdsourcing marketplaces, and their ideas integrated to produce solutions to a range of design problems. Specifically, we will show the results of large-scale experiments using thousands of novice designers to produce conceptual designs. Our results suggest that in the future, innovation might be partly performed by new kinds of organizations, assembled and dissolved in a matter of days.
