Technology Management Seminar Series
November 2, 2005

Responsive Organizational Dynamism:
Managing Technology Life Cycles using Organizational Learning Techniques

The Stevens Alliance for Technology Management is pleased to announce the fifth in its Technology Management Seminar Series, sponsored in collaboration with the Columbia University School of Engineering. The seminar will be presented by Dr. Arthur Langer on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, 6:30-9:00 PM.

Responsive organizational dynamism is an approach to how organizations should respond to challenges posed by the introduction of new technologies. Dr. Langer introduced this concept to readers of the SATM publication Current Issues in Technology Management in his article that appeared in the Spring 2005 edition. He postulates that technology -- which by its nature produces change -- has a special role to play in changing organizational behavior and culture. It can catalyze the evolution and maturation of the organization, not only in dealing with new technological issues but in coping with other change agents as well.

Dr. Langer's lecture focuses on the role of new technologies in affecting organizational behavior and the role of information technology functions within organizations. He will address such issues as: What are the generic aspects of information technology that have made it an integral part of strategic advantage for many organizations? How do organizations respond to these generic aspects as catalysts for change? How do practitioners view the role of information technology in this context, and how should organizations and individuals adjust to technology's short-term and long-term impacts?

Dr. Langer is on the faculty of the Columbia University School of Continuing Education and is Associate Director of Instruction and Curricular Development for Programs in Technology. He consults on technology, staff development, and management transformation, and is Chairman of Workforce Technologies, a nonprofit social venture in Harlem.

The Seminar will take place on Wednesday, November 2 at the Columbia University campus (C.P. Davis Auditorium, Schapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research). Light refreshments will be served at 6:30, and the Seminar will begin at 7:00 PM. You can register by contacting Sharen Glennon at 201-216-5381, or sglennon@stevens.edu. Admission is free but seating is limited, so early registration is suggested. Please circulate this invitation to students whom you think would be interested.

Thanks, Larry Gastwirt Director, Stevens Alliance for Technology Management
